A rare permitted exception inside Recife's infamous 60km shark-ban zone, Gaibu sits on the Gaibu Peninsula in Pernambuco, Brazil, where a fringing reef at Enseadas produces thick-lipped, heavy peaks among regular close-outs and onshore chop. It works on E to S swells from 2-8ft, with westerly offshores needed to clean things up, though those winds are far from the daily norm. The reef bottom keeps the wave punchy and occasionally pipes across all tides, but the overall consistency is medium and the majority of sessions lean toward messy beachbreak conditions. Expert surfers are most at home here, though intermediate riders with good judgment can read better sections. Bottom: reef. Season: consistent March through August on SE and E groundswell. Consistency: medium. Pack a leash with a backup swivel and come early on weekdays, because weekends turn this into a circus, as it's the only legal surfing option in the area without crossing into banned territory.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends are notoriously overcrowded as Gaibu functions as a geographic pressure valve for the entire region, given the Recife shark ban running from 1998. Locals have priority and know the reef cold. Arriving at dawn on a weekday is the only realistic way to find some breathing room. Respect the lineup order.

Access & Facilities

A car park is available and lifeguards are on duty. Water quality carries a commercial pollution flag, so consider that after sessions if you have cuts or reef scrapes. Enseadas is the main break section. The surrounding area has basic amenities.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gaibu is blown out or overrun, Maracaipe to the south is the most consistent beach in the zone and hosted the 2000 World Surfing Games. Cupe, just south of the Porto de Suape jetty, offers long stretches of consistent peaks worth checking when the swell is running.
