A left-hand reef break off Fernando de Noronha, Abras earns its reputation as arguably the best left on the island when a solid N-NE swell combines with low tide and the rare SW offshore wind. The wave opens with a barrel section before ripping into a long carvable wall, then accelerates into a fast, hollow close-out over a sharp reef shelf. S-SE winds will blow into the face of the barrel, keeping it marginally rideable, but SW is the gold standard. This is strictly expert territory: the combination of fickle conditions, a gnarled shallow reef, sharp rocks, and sea urchins makes it unforgiving for anyone still building confidence. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: austral summer, when N-NE swells pulse through. Consistency: low, needs 6-8ft of swell and low tide simultaneously. Wear booties and watch the rising tide closely as the exit window closes fast once water comes up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup sees few surfers even on weekends, mostly because the conditions rarely stack up. When they do, the crew in the water will be experienced and aware of how precious the session is. Respect the takeoff order, call your waves clearly, and stay out of the way of surfers coming through the inside section at speed.

Access & Facilities

No parking or facilities on-site. Fernando de Noronha is a UNESCO protected marine park with a daily visitor fee and limited entry numbers. Budget for a park tax on top of flights and accommodation. Booties are strongly advised given the urchins and sharp reef. Watch the tide table carefully: a rising tide can trap you and make getting out of the water seriously dangerous.

Nearby Alternatives

When Abras isn't lining up, Cacimba do Padre is the go-to on the island, a powerful beach break that handles bigger swells and hosts international contests. Boldro offers lefts and rights over a hazardous reef for those willing to push into more technical surf. Praia do Meio provides gentler peaks on mid tides for a lower-stakes session.
