Half Moon Bay and the South Jetty form the core of Westport's surf, a beachbreak cluster on Washington's Pacific coast that punches well above its grey, industrial setting. Half Moon Bay sits sheltered inside the harbor entrance, a crescent of sand hemmed by dunes to the south and the marina to the north, which makes it the go-to call when winter south winds howl the exposed coast to pieces. The South Jetty catches more swell and gets genuinely good on a proper NW or W groundswell, producing hollow, fast sections that reward surfers willing to deal with cold water and fickle winds. Both spots handle NW, W, and SW swell best, with E wind ideal for the South Jetty and SE wind the call for Half Moon Bay. Mid to high tide keeps the banks from going too shallow and dumpy. Shoulder-high to overhead is the sweet spot. Bottom: sand. Season: June through February. Consistency: moderate. Pack a 5/4 with booties and hood, cold water is non-negotiable here year-round.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Westport draws a moderate crowd, but these are the only surf spots in town, so everyone ends up here. The vibe is welcoming and mellow. Traveling surfers are generally treated fine. Dawn patrol on winter weekdays gives you the lineup largely to yourself. Expect a few more bodies when a clean swell lines up on a weekend.

Access & Facilities

Ample parking at both spots makes access straightforward. The marina area has amenities nearby. Water quality is clean. Main hazards are rip currents off the jetties, sudden howling onshore winds, and genuinely cold water. Dress for the cold before you get out of the car.

Nearby Alternatives

Ocean Shores, directly across the bay, has a similar jetty beachbreak setup worth checking when Westport is blown out from a different angle. The broader Olympic Peninsula coastline holds more exposed beach and point options for surfers willing to explore, though access to those stretches can be limited and conditions are often raw.
