A breakwater jetty setup on Washington's southern coast delivers punchy, hollow peaks that surprise visiting surfers expecting only mushy beach break. Ocean Shores works on swells from the NW through SW, with mid to high tide generally producing the cleanest shape along the jetty walls. Offshore winds blow from the east, which is the prevailing pattern in calmer weather windows. Size range is forgiving: it picks up small swells under 3ft and handles overhead surf before maxing out around 6ft plus. Beginners can find approachable sections while intermediates work the more powerful jetty peaks. Bottom: sand with jetty structure. Season: fall through early spring for most consistent swell. Consistency: moderate. A local surf shop in town is the best first stop for current conditions and specific break info before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see almost no one in the water. Weekends bring a handful of surfers at most. The lineup is generally relaxed, though standard PNW etiquette applies: respect whoever is already out, especially locals who know the break. Leave the aggression at home.

Access & Facilities

Ocean Shores is a mapped town on the Washington coast, easy to reach by car. Public beach access is straightforward. The local surf shop is the most reliable resource for current conditions and break-specific advice. Water temperatures run cold year-round, requiring a 4/3 at minimum, typically 5/4 with boots and hood in winter.

Nearby Alternatives

Westport, just across Grays Harbor to the south, offers more consistent and better-documented surf with a functioning surf scene and additional jetty setups. Moclips and Pacific Beach to the north are worth checking when Ocean Shores is not cooperating.
