A long stretch of Pacific-facing beach break on the southwestern tip of Washington state, Long Beach Peninsula delivers mellow sand-bar surf in one of the most uncrowded lineups on the US Pacific Northwest coast. S, SW, and W swells feed the sandbars best from June through August, with offshore E winds grooming the surface cleanly. High tide tends to give the waves the most shape. Expect thigh- to head-high surf on average, this is not a heavy-water spot. The wave suits everyone from beginners logging their first paddle-outs to intermediates working on turns, and the welcoming local vibe means zero territorial pressure. Bottom: sand. Season: June to August. Consistency: moderate, dependent on summer south swell. Cold Pacific water runs year-round, so bring at least a 3/2 wetsuit even in the warmest months, and a 4/3 for shoulder-season sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect near-empty lineups on weekdays and only a handful of surfers even on weekends. There is no localism to speak of. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming. If you're learning to surf or returning after a long break, this is one of the better spots on the Washington coast to shake off the rust without social friction.

Access & Facilities

For the main peninsula stretch, exit US-101 onto State Highway 103, which runs through Long Beach town. For the Columbia River North Jetty zone, take Highway 100 Loop out of Ilwaco and follow signs to the North Jetty. Day use is free. The town of Long Beach has food and basic amenities. Bring your own water and pack out your gear. No surf rentals confirmed at the jetty end.

Nearby Alternatives

When summer south swells miss the peninsula, check Westport to the north, which picks up more consistent NW groundswell and has a more defined jetty-assisted peak. Cape Disappointment State Park nearby is worth a look for wind and swell cross-reference on marginal days.
