A remote Gulf jetty break that rewards the drive with uncrowded sand-bottom peaks stretching for miles along the south Texas coast. SE, E, and NE swells are the engine here, ideally 3-8ft at mid tide with N, NW, or W winds keeping faces clean. Strong S winds are sheltered by the jetties themselves, still pushing chest-high peelers off the dredge-built sandy point on the north side. Intermediate surfers will find the most consistency, but beginners can wade into mellower sections and advanced surfers chase the 8-12ft sets that stack up during hurricane season. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall and late winter to mid-spring. Consistency: swell-dependent, low outside hurricane season. Getting here means 65-plus miles of beach driving from South Padre Island or Corpus Christi in a 4WD rig, so check the forecast before committing. Bring water, recovery gear, and a full tank.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The drive keeps almost everyone out. On a good swell you might share the lineup with a handful of committed locals and the occasional visiting surfer willing to make the trek. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming. Space is not a problem.

Access & Facilities

No easy road access. Drive 65-plus miles of beach south from South Padre Island or north from the Port Mansfield cut, or boat in from the Intracoastal Waterway. Four-wheel drive with aired-down tires is mandatory. No facilities on the beach. Bring everything: food, water, fuel, first aid. Nearest town is Port Mansfield, which is small. The isolation is the main hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

Little Shell and Big Shell beaches sit along the same drive and can produce hollow, punchy peaks when the swell is running. South Padre Island offers beach break closer to services when the long haul south isn't worth it.
