The deepest offshore waters on the Texas Gulf Coast funnel swell onto ultra-shallow sandbars at the Colorado River mouth near Matagorda, producing the most powerful, hollow barrels north of Port Aransas. Best on S, SE, or E swell with N, NW, or WNW winds, mid tide, from chest-high to a few feet overhead. Four distinct breaks spread the crowd: the north jetty fires long rights on NE or E swell, the dredge-formed sand point delivers long rights on cold fronts, Spanish Tiles is a hard-breaking beachbreak, and Shellbanks to the south breaks over a shell bottom in inches of water. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the juice here, while intermediates should respect the shallow, fast nature of the takeoff zones. Bottom: sand and shell. Season: late summer through fall, late winter to mid-spring. Consistency: high. Brown, murky water from the river is the norm, and if you paddle the south jetty across the river, watch for gators.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is genuinely welcoming and the four spread-out breaks keep pressure low even on busy days. Weekends bring a few surfers but rarely feel crowded. Respect the locals who make the drive from Houston and give way at the tighter jetty peaks.

Access & Facilities

About 90 minutes from Houston via Hwy 60 through Bay City to Matagorda. A car park sits at the rivermouth, beach parking is available for the northern breaks. No facilities on the beach. Water is consistently murky brown. Strong rips run around the rivermouth, and shell-bottom breaks require solid wipeout awareness. Gators have been spotted if you cross the river.

Nearby Alternatives

On large E swells, Quintana finds extra power and is worth checking a few miles up the coast. For big S or SW swells, Surfside Jetty turns on to the north. Galveston's Flagship Pier offers more accessible, stable sandbars for longboarders when Matagorda is too stormy or the drive feels long.
