Reliable rolling peaks on either side of a concrete jetty make Packery Channel the most consistently crowded break on the central Texas coast. The jetties channel Gulf energy into above-average sandbars, sheltering the lineup from the relentless longshore current. The north side favors longer boards hunting reprieve from dominant S winds in summer, while the south side wakes up on NE and E swells from fall through spring. S, SE, and E swells are the primary drivers, best wind is N, NW, or W, medium tide is the sweet spot, though it works across all tides. All levels can paddle out here, but bigger days thin the beginner population fast. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall, late winter to mid-spring. Consistency: high. Buy a beach parking permit before you arrive, enforcement is active and fines are not optional.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the most consistently packed break on the central Texas coast. Weekend crowds are intense, and spring break turns the beach into a circus entirely unrelated to surfing. Longboarders dominate the north peak in summer and can be difficult to surf around on set waves. Localism is mild, vibe is generally mellow, but collisions are a real risk at peak times. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Reach the jetties from Port Aransas heading south on Hwy 361 about 15 miles, or cross the JFK Causeway from Corpus Christi and head north on Hwy 361. Paved parking, restrooms, and beach access are all on site. Water quality is relatively clean for an estuary-adjacent break. No serious hazards beyond the jetty structure itself and fishing lines near the rocks.

Nearby Alternatives

Bob Hall Pier to the north is the most popular single peak on the coast and worth checking when Packery is overwhelmed. On large NE swells the Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas produces peaks on both sides depending on sandbar alignment. If S or SW swells push through with real size, Surfside Jetty further north comes alive.
