Sandbar peaks flanking a pair of jetties on Mustang Island give Fish Pass its character: S, SE, and E swells wrap into workable rights and lefts on either side, while the channel between the jetties occasionally squeezes into a shorter, hollower section on high tide. Best wind is N, NW, or W, which the jetties help funnel and clean up. Waist-to-head-high is the sweet spot, though it starts showing shape around 3ft and can hold through overhead-plus. The spot draws longboarders and funboard riders from Corpus Christi looking for something more forgiving than raw beachbreak, but shortboarders and fish riders find enough punch between the jetties on solid days. Crowd is moderate through the week, noticeably heavier on weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall, late winter to mid-spring. Consistency: moderate. Persistent longshore current runs at the peak near the jetty, so expect a shoulder burn paddling back into position all session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends push the lineup to crowded, especially in peak season. The local vibe is welcoming and the atmosphere stays mellow most of the time. That said, the tight channel between the jetties can get competitive and a little sketchy when the surf is pumping, so give extra space and read the current before committing to that section.

Access & Facilities

Three access options exist: pay-entry at Mustang Island State Park on the south side, a public access road to the north with beach driving for several miles, or off-road from the main highway requiring 4WD. Watch for loose sand when driving the beach. The state park has facilities including restrooms. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

St. Joe's Island offers similar sandbars and a comparable vibe when Fish Pass is blown out or packed. Port Aransas beachbreaks to the south are worth checking for a different swell angle, and the Corpus Christi Bay side has options for beginners when the Gulf is too sizable.
