Consistent pier bowls break on both sides of the Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas, Texas, offering one of the more reliable options on the upper Gulf Coast. S, SE, and E swells are the go-to, with N, NW, or W winds keeping faces clean. Mid tide tends to organize the banks best, and the spot works from waist-high up to a few feet overhead before it starts to close out. The rip alongside the pier makes paddling out manageable, but you'll work to hold position against the current once you're in the lineup. Bottom is sand throughout. Best season runs late summer through fall, and again from late winter into mid-spring. Consistency here is a genuine asset on a coast where reliable surf is hard to find. The left side of the pier tends to hold shape better and runs a bit faster on larger swells, while the right offers a softer option that suits beginners and longboarders well. Watch for fishermen casting from the pier, particularly during shark fishing sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is moderate and compresses near the best banks directly off the pier. Spread out and the crowd thins quickly. Vibe is relatively positive. The structured access and beginner-friendly reputation mean unskilled surfers in the lineup are a real hazard, particularly on weekends. Be patient and communicate clearly.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available at the pier, access is easy, and the beach is straightforward to navigate. No dedicated surf facilities on-site. Water quality is generally clean for the Texas coast, though commercial activity in Port Aransas means occasional pollution events.

Nearby Alternatives

When Horace Caldwell is small or crowded, Bob Hall Pier to the south offers the most popular and consistent sandbar surf on the Texas coast. San Jose Island across the ship channel delivers cleaner peaks on bigger SE swells if you're willing to take the ferry.
