A pier-anchored sandbars setup in Galveston, Texas, the 1,000-plus-foot structure at 91st Street creates some of the island's best-shaped peaks but comes with a relentless fight to stay in position. S and SE swells are the engine here, with N, NW, or WNW winds cleaning things up. Best from waist-high to a few feet overhead at medium to high tide, when the pier bowls organize into punchy lefts and rights. Intermediate and advanced surfers will feel at home, beginners will struggle with the current, not just the waves. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall and late winter into mid-spring. Consistency: moderate. Pack water, expect to burn your shoulders, and treat the fishermen with respect or you will hear about it. The rip alongside the pier makes the paddle-out easy, but you will spend the entire session fighting the longshore current to hold your peak. Water quality here is fair at best given proximity to the Houston shipping channel and Galveston runoff, so cover any open cuts.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The best peaks draw a competitive cluster, but spread to either side of the pier and the density drops off fast. The vibe is doable rather than hostile, though on a rare good day the lineup sharpens up quickly. Respect fishermen on the pier itself, conflicts with anglers are the most common friction point in the water here.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking runs along the seawall and access is straightforward. Galveston's Seawall Boulevard puts food and water within easy reach. Bring your own freshwater rinse since facilities are basic. The Houston shipping channel proximity means water quality can be poor after rain, so check before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When onshore winds shut down 91st, the jetties at the island's east end sometimes offer a cleaner angle on S swells. Spots along the west end of the island can pick up SSE energy with less current interference on smaller tides.
