A sand-bottom beach break flanking a pier on Georgia's Atlantic coast, Tybee Island Pier is as good as it gets for surfing in the Southeast US, which also sets expectations appropriately. SE and E swells are the ticket, with W to NW winds cleaning up the face. Mid to high tide is the window: low tide exposes the bank and kills the shape. Waves run knee to head high the vast majority of sessions, occasionally reaching overhead on a strong hurricane swell. This wave suits the full spectrum from beginners logging their first pop-ups to shortboarders looking for a quick SE hurricane spin-off. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through early fall, early spring. Consistency: low, this is Georgia. The honest tip is to check the report religiously and move fast when it does light up, because clean days here are genuinely rare.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay mellow with a handful of regulars. Weekends in summer get busy, especially when a swell does fill in, because everyone on the island knows it. The vibe is genuinely welcoming for a spot with any crowd at all. Show basic lineup respect and you'll be fine.

Access & Facilities

Parking is metered along the beach road and fills fast in summer months. Bring coins or a card. The 16th Street access is straightforward, no long hike required. Water quality is generally clean, though runoff after heavy rain warrants caution. Watch for the occasional jellyfish or stingray when shuffling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tybee is completely flat or blown out, the wider island has a few other sand breaks worth walking. During big hurricane swell events, the outer sandbars can organize into something more substantial, and it's worth exploring the island's less crowded accesses rather than stacking up at the pier.
