An open-water sandbar between St. Simons and Little St. Simons Islands, Harbor Marker Buoys is one of the more unusual surf setups on the East Coast. At low to mid tide with NE, E, or SE swell, the bar kicks up grinding, peeling rights and lefts that can catch most surfers off guard given how far offshore it sits. Visible from the 5th Street shoreline, reaching it requires a kayak or boat paddle, which filters the crowd to near zero on most days. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, and early spring. Consistency: fickle, conditions-dependent. Be honest with yourself about your paddling fitness before committing: strong tidal currents run through this inlet, shipping traffic is real, and there is no easy bailout if conditions change while you are out there.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect virtually nobody out. The paddle commitment alone eliminates most surfers. There is no local crew to navigate, but that solitude also means no backup if something goes wrong. Dawn sessions before boat traffic picks up are the smart call.

Access & Facilities

Kayak or boat launch from St. Simons Island is the only realistic option. No parking, facilities, or rentals at the break itself. Bring water, sunscreen, and a leash you trust. Water quality is generally clean, with some runoff impact after heavy rain events.

Nearby Alternatives

When the sandbar is not firing, the beach breaks along St. Simons Island proper can produce rideable peaks in similar swell windows. Jekyll Island to the south offers exposed beach break that picks up more open-ocean swell on its outer bars.
