A jetty-refracted left-hander on the SW Florida Gulf Coast, North Jetty at Venice Inlet is one of the only spots in the region capable of holding serious wave size when a hurricane or gulf winter low pushes through. Optimal conditions are SW to S swell from 3ft to 10ft+, offshore or light NE winds, at low to mid tide. On a proper swell the wave peels left off the tip of the jetty and walls down toward the beach, giving longer rides than anything else on this stretch of coast. It suits intermediates through experienced surfers, though all levels paddle out when it fires. Weekdays see a thin crew of locals who know the forecasts well, weekends and hurricane swells pull a hungry crowd from across the Gulf Coast and beyond. Bottom: sand and jetty rock. Season: summer hurricane season and winter gulf lows. Consistency: low, but high reward when it aligns. Watch swell models and buoy data closely, if you do not live nearby, timing a trip here is genuinely difficult.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are quiet, often just a handful of regulars who track every buoy and model. Hurricane swells draw a serious, wave-hungry crowd from across the Gulf Coast and occasional east coast travelers. Localism is not reported as heavy, but respect is earned by knowing the takeoff zone at the jetty tip and not being clueless in the lineup on bigger days.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available at the park on the north side of Venice Inlet. The jetty itself requires care around rocks and surge, especially on larger swells. Rip currents and current near the inlet mouth can be strong, know your exit before paddling out. No reported facilities beyond the park lot. Venice has food and supplies nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

The south jetty on the opposite side of the inlet offers a different angle and can pick up similar swells. Further up the coast toward Sarasota, beach breaks fill in on smaller, shorter-period gulf wind swell when the jetty is not quite big enough to organize.
