A series of offshore sandbar breaks between Tybee and Little Tybee islands deliver long, mellow rides that punch well above their modest size. Think Canoes at Waikiki but without the crowd: knee-to-chest-high NE, E, or SE swell wrapping into the inlet at low to mid tide produces long, rolling walls suited to longboards, funboards, and fish. The paddle-out from the south end of Tybee is substantial, filtering out anyone not committed. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent but decent window with multiple directions. Come prepared for serious shoulder burn since you are surfing inside an inlet and will be paddling constantly between sets, making conditioning as important as board choice.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The long paddle keeps the lineup honest. On most days you will have the sandbars largely to yourself or share them with a handful of longboarders who know the spot. Localism is minimal and the vibe is welcoming. Weekends in summer can see more SUPs and cruisers making the trip, but even then it rarely feels crowded.

Access & Facilities

Park at the south end of Tybee Island and paddle out through the whitewater to the bars. Summer parking fills quickly so early arrival matters. Restrooms and food options are available back in town. After heavy rain, runoff can affect water quality, so check conditions post-storm. Strong currents and the odd jellyfish or stingray shuffle your feet on the sand when wading.

Nearby Alternatives

When swell is too small for the sandbars, the main Tybee Beach pier area catches whatever is running. Further afield, Folly Beach in South Carolina offers more consistent beach break options when a proper swell window opens up.
