A mellow beach break on Georgia's barrier coast, St. Simons delivers knee-to-head-high waves when E to NE windswells push across the sandbars at high tide. SE and E swells are the ticket, ideally with W or NW winds cleaning things up. The tidal range here is extreme, so timing matters: the wave mostly disappears at low tide and the currents get serious. Sandbars offshore on the wide continental shelf dissipate swell energy before it arrives, keeping size capped and conditions sloppy on most days. Hurricane season boosts the swell window but also cranks rip currents, so read the water before paddling out. Beginners and longboarders will enjoy the forgiving, powerless walls on calm summer mornings. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: low. The jetty near 5th Street is the most reliable section, park at the open lot on 1st Street and walk straight down to assess conditions before committing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is relaxed and welcoming. Weekdays see almost no one in the water, weekends attract a handful of surfers. Beginners and SUP riders share the inside with swimmers in summer. Stay aware of kids in the shorebreak and give the inner zone plenty of space when families are out.

Access & Facilities

Park in the open lot at 1st Street and walk directly to the beach. Access is easy and free. 5th Street near the jetty offers the most consistent takeoff zone. Water quality is clean outside of runoff events after heavy rain. No board rentals noted on site, bring your own or source from the nearest surf shop on the island.

Nearby Alternatives

When St. Simons is flat or blown out, check Tybee Island to the south near Savannah for a similar sand-bottom setup that can catch more organized swell. Sebastian Inlet, further down the Florida coast, is a longer drive but delivers far more consistent and powerful surf on the same E swell windows.
