Ossabaw Island is one of the few places on the Georgia coast where surfable waves appear at all, and even then only under specific storm conditions. The continental shelf extends over 60 miles offshore here, and the coastline sits tucked behind the Carolinas and Florida, meaning only hurricanes or nor'easters push enough NE swell into the Georgia Bight to produce rideable surf. When it does come together, it requires an incoming to dead-high tide to work, as the six to ten-foot tidal range floods the shallows with force and creates rideable sand-bottom peaks. Expect knee to chest-high waves on good days, rarely more. The crowd is essentially zero since the island is accessible only by boat, but that isolation cuts both ways. Bottom: Sand. Season: September to March. Consistency: Low, storm-dependent. Bring whatever board floats your boat because the wave won't judge you, though a fish or longboard makes the most of the small, soft peaks you're likely to encounter.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

With no road access and boat-only entry, you'll almost certainly surf alone or close to it. There's no local crew to speak of. The tradeoff is that if something goes wrong out here, help is not close by. Surf with a partner and let someone know your plan.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only. Ossabaw is a Georgia Heritage Preserve managed by the state and permits are required to land. No facilities, no food, no rentals. Bring water, sun protection, a first aid kit, and a charged communication device. Sharks and jellyfish are present, the water is clean by Georgia state standards, which publishes real-time quality data.

Nearby Alternatives

Tybee Island to the north is Georgia's most accessible surf beach and catches similar NE swell with actual infrastructure nearby. Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island offer comparable storm-dependent sand-bottom surf with road access when Ossabaw isn't worth the boat trip.
