A sand-dependent right-hand point, Panama Rights sits in a protected bay on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast and only comes alive when the rivermouth closes and enough swell bends around the boulder-strewn point. SW wrapping swell is the key, pushing mid-to-high tide into the bay in front of the beached fishing boats. When the sand builds correctly, it delivers a full-walling right with easy take-offs, room for cutbacks, and a mellow cruise down the line, ideal for intermediates and longboarders. At rare late-season peaks, a 300m sandbar can form and serious size will link outside sections for an expert-only ride that ends either in a long wall or on the rocks. Bottom: sand over rock point. Season: SW swell season, May to October. Consistency: medium. The estuary nearby means water quality can dip after rain, check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are intermittent. On good days the bay draws intermediates and learners from nearby Arugam Bay, so expect some company during peak swell season. The wave is generous enough that the lineup rarely gets tense. Locals know the sand conditions better than any forecast, respect that knowledge.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. Free parking available. The estuary and rivermouth proximity means pollution can be a genuine issue after rainfall, avoid paddling after heavy rain. Tuk-tuk access from Arugam Bay is straightforward. Bring water, sunscreen, and your own food.

Nearby Alternatives

Arugam Bay's Main Point and A-Bay are the go-to options if Panama isn't firing, offering more consistent and better-shaped waves across a wider range of conditions. Pottuvil Point to the north is one of the longest waves in the country when it's on.
