A right-hand reef point around 2km south of Arugam Bay's main break, Crocodile Rock rewards the effort of a 20-minute walk and lagoon crossing with a noticeably quieter lineup. The wave works best on SW to S swell in the 3-6ft range with offshore NE winds, holding shape best at mid tide. It suits intermediate surfers who want proper walls without the shoulder-to-shoulder pressure of the Bay itself, though beginners comfortable on reef can manage the smaller days. Bottom: reef. Season: May to September, peak July to August. Consistency: moderate, tied closely to the same swell window that fires Arugam Point. Bring reef booties if your feet are soft, and do not ford the lagoon at dusk or dawn given the wildlife corridor that runs through the bordering Yala National Park jungle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The 20-minute walk filters the crowd significantly compared to Arugam Bay, Whisky Point, or Pottuvil Point. Expect a relaxed vibe when you arrive. Peak July-August will see more travelers making the trek, so an early start is still worthwhile. Locals who make it out deserve respect given the effort involved.

Access & Facilities

Access requires a walk south from Arugam Bay, crossing a lagoon en route. There are no facilities at the break itself, so pack water, sunscreen, and a snack. The jungle fringe borders Yala National Park and the lagoon area is a known crocodile habitat: keep the crossing quick and do it in daylight only. The rocky reef is the primary in-water hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Crocodile Rock is too small or too messy, Arugam Bay's main point and Whisky Point both sit within a short distance and pick up similar swell. Elephant Rock, often confused with this break, is another nearby option worth checking on the same mission.
