A mechanical right-hand point that peels for up to 500m along a narrow sandy spit north of Arugam Bay, Pottuvil Point delivers some of the longest rides in Sri Lanka when the sand has built up and the S to SE swell is running. Offshore SW winds keep it clean, and low to mid tide is the window when the wave stands up, barrels through its middle section, and stays close enough to shore that you can step off near dry sand and walk back to the top. It suits all skill levels in smaller surf, but as size builds past head-high, beginners should peel off to Whisky Point 700m north. Bottom: mixed sand over rock. Season: Jul to Sep, with May and Jun occasionally productive. Consistency: low to medium, sand-dependent. Hire a guide from any surf bungalow in Arugam Bay before attempting the tuk-tuk track in from Pottuvil town. There is no shortcut, and the last stretch is a 10-minute walk in the heat.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is generally welcoming and can be empty on weekdays outside peak season. July through September draws the most traffic and on blown-out days at A-Bay the crowd migrates here fast. Dawn patrol gives you the best shot at uncrowded rides. Localism is minimal, but keep an eye on your gear near the rocks.

Access & Facilities

Reach the point by tuk-tuk from Pottuvil town along a narrow sandy track, then walk 10 minutes to the takeoff. No 4WD? It is a 500m walk from where the track ends. Surf schools and rental boards are available at Whisky Point nearby. Water can be affected by estuary runoff after heavy rain. Watch for jellyfish.

Nearby Alternatives

Whisky Point, 700m north, offers mellow rolling walls ideal for beginners and longboarders when Pottuvil is too big or inconsistent. Arugam Bay Main Point is the benchmark wave for the area and works more consistently in the same swell window. Okanda, about an hour south by tuk-tuk, picks up even more swell if you want something rawer.
