A long right-hand point peeling off a large rock headland in southeastern Sri Lanka, Okanda delivers rides up to 300 yards along well-shaped sand banks with almost nobody out. It picks up S and SE swells, works best in W to SW winds, and runs through all tides at a consistent, near-perfect pace. Beginner to expert surfers can enjoy it, though overhead-plus surf brings strong currents that will test paddling fitness. Bottom: sand. Season: May through August. Consistency: lower swell exposure than nearby Arugam Bay, but reliable on smaller days. Budget at minimum two hours of rough dirt-road driving from A Bay, and hire a local guide because you will not find it without one. Jellyfish are a regular hazard, so check before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the emptiest quality waves in Sri Lanka. Some days the lineup goes unsurfed entirely. Crowd pressure is essentially non-existent, and the local vibe is welcoming. Treat the surrounding national park and its communities with respect to keep it that way.

Access & Facilities

A minimum two-hour drive on winding dirt tracks from Arugam Bay. Hiring a guide is not optional. The spot sits within or near Okanda National Park territory, so come self-sufficient with water, food, and sun protection. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Arugam Bay main point is the obvious fallback when Okanda isn't firing, offering more swell exposure and a proper village setup. Pottuvil Point and Peanut Farm, both within easy reach of A Bay, cover smaller swells and mixed crowds.
