One of Spain's most consistently surfed beaches, Zarautz stretches over a kilometre of sand along the Basque Coast between San Sebastián and Bilbao, firing on NW and N swells from waist-high to well overhead. Offshore winds blow from the S, and the break works through all tides, though banks shift seasonally and the best peaks migrate accordingly. The wave suits all levels when small, but the lineup runs at an extremely high standard year-round, with competitive locals who know every sandbar. Bottom: sand. Season: September through February. Consistency: high. Arrive early on weekday mornings in autumn to find the peak spread thinned out before schools and crowds arrive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Zarautz is one of the busiest surf lineups in Spain, full stop. Weekend and summer sessions are heavily congested with surf schools, bodyboarders, and a deep local crew surfing at a high level. The vibe is doable but competitive. Respect priority, don't snake, and if the main peaks are three-deep, spread down the beach.

Access & Facilities

Take the E-70 from San Sebastián west toward Bilbao and exit for Zarautz. Roadside parking fills early on weekends and through summer. Park on the main street and walk down. Beach facilities are solid: lifeguard coverage, showers, toilets, and surf schools. Surf shops in the town centre carry hardware and wax. Water quality is fair but degrades after heavy rain due to residential runoff. Avoid the eastern end closest to town after storms.

Nearby Alternatives

When Zarautz is maxed out or impossibly crowded, the beaches west toward Getaria and east toward Orio offer comparable swell exposure with significantly fewer people. On the biggest swells of the year, Mundaka is firing an hour east and worth every kilometre of the drive.
