A sheltered beach break in Suances, on Spain's Cantabrian coast, Kontxa sits inside a bay that cuts the worst of the W and SW winds but pays for that shelter with compromised wave quality. Offshore winds blow from the E and NE here, and the spot picks up N and NW swells funneled into the bay. Rideable from under 1ft, it holds up to about 8ft before closing out, though most productive sessions sit in the 2-4ft range at low to mid tide. The wave faces suit beginners and those returning to the water after a break, as sets tend to be forgiving rather than punchy. Crowds are light even on weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter for the most consistent swell. Consistency: moderate. One honest warning worth flagging is water quality: local reports flag pollution in the bay, so skip sessions after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday lineups are essentially empty, and weekends see only a handful of surfers. Localism is not a reported issue. The shelter from W and SW winds means conditions here can look deceptively inviting when nearby breaks are blown out, which occasionally draws a small crowd from town.

Access & Facilities

The beach is in the town of Suances, easy to reach by road with town-centre amenities close by. Check water quality advisories before paddling out, particularly after rainfall given the documented pollution. No significant paddle-out hazards beyond a shorey at higher tides.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kontxa is flat or the water quality is off, the main beach at Suances picks up more swell and offers better shape on a solid N or NW pulse. Playa de Los Locos, a short drive away, is a more exposed beach break that handles larger swells and delivers higher-quality surf when the conditions align.
