A heavy, rarely-surfed big-wave left breaks off the rocky point at Deba, on the Basque Coast of Northeast Spain. It needs a solid W to NW groundswell, 8ft minimum on the face, before it starts showing its teeth, and holds well past 16ft on the biggest winter pulses. Offshore winds blow from the south and southeast. Mid to high tide fills in the sections, low tide exposes the reef and makes the paddle-out more consequential. This is experienced-surfer-only territory: the wave is powerful, the bottom is reef and rock, and the crowd is minimal because the entry bar is high, not because it's easy to find. Bottom: reef. Season: Oct through Mar. Consistency: low, swell-dependent. Come on a proper groundswell or stay home. The beach section beside it works in smaller swells but is widely considered mediocre, a placeholder until the point lights up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups here are empty to near-empty on weekdays and weekends alike. The high swell threshold does the filtering. Basque Country has a strong surf culture and locals know this wave, so respect the lineup and read the room. Don't paddle out in conditions you can't handle.

Access & Facilities

Deba is a small town on the N-634 coast road through the Basque Country. The point is visible from the road on a big swell. No specialist facilities at the break itself. Deba town has basic services. Bring your own water and anything else you need. The reef is sharp and the hold-downs are real, so a solid big-wave leash and a partner on the cliff are sensible precautions.

Nearby Alternatives

When Deba is too big or the swell direction is off, the Basque Coast has several beach breaks and points within driving range that handle a wider range of conditions. Spots in the Zarautz and Zumaia corridor offer more forgiving options across tide and swell windows.
