A long, dune-backed beachbreak north of Santander that produces well-defined banks across most tides and stays consistent when much of the Cantabrian coast goes flat. NW swell is the sweet spot, with S or SE winds cleaning up the face, the wave maxes out and closes down in bigger swells above 6ft. It suits intermediates upward on regular days but draws surf schools when small, so expect a mixed crowd whenever the banks are good. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, peaking Sep-Nov. Consistency: high. Rivermouth drainage from the village adds pollution after rain, particularly in autumn, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Proximity to Santander means Somo fills up quickly when the banks are good, especially on summer weekends. The vibe is generally mellow but expect busy lineups from June through August. Surf schools operate on the beach in smaller swells, which pushes intermediates toward the better-shaped peaks. Dawn patrol mid-week in autumn is the move for less competition.

Access & Facilities

A large beachfront car park in the village makes access straightforward. Showers, lifeguards, surf schools, and rental shops are on hand. A campsite sits just down the road, and Santander's bars and restaurants are a short ferry ride across the bay. Water quality is fair in summer but typically poor after heavy rain due to the nearby rivermouth.

Nearby Alternatives

When Somo is maxed out, the sheltered beachbreaks further east along the Cantabrian coast offer protection from strong SW winds. The Loredo section of the same beach can hold better shape at certain tides and sandbars.
