A barreling left-hand reef in a cliff-lined bay on Cantabria's coast, Playa de los Caballos is one of the stronger breaks in a region that already punches hard on the European surf circuit. The main wave is a finger of reef angling into the Bay of Biscay, taking NW and W swells and channeling them into a feathering left that can barrel through 100m to the inside on a solid day. It needs 5-6ft to wake up and handles 10ft+, but once it gets that big the rips inside the bay start interfering with wave quality. S and SE winds are ideal. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot. Intermediate and up only: the reef is shallow and unforgiving, the paddle-out is a workout when sets are cleaning up, and the access involves a short, slippery cliff descent. Bottom: reef and sand. Season: September to November. Consistency: mid-range, swell-dependent. One serious non-surf warning: car break-ins and tyre slashing have been reported repeatedly here, so bring someone who can stay with the vehicle or accept the risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet, weekends draw more surfers. It used to run heavier local pressure and respect is still expected. Humility in the lineup goes a long way. The main deterrent keeping crowds thin is access difficulty and the car crime problem, not goodwill.

Access & Facilities

Take road S-470 toward Cuchia, then a dirt track to the clifftop. A short but slippery descent gets you to the water. No facilities on site. Car break-ins and tyre slashing have been documented multiple times by visiting surfers and noted in the Spanish surf guide. Bring a car-sitter or park strategically. Water quality is fair, with some runoff after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Caballos is too big, too messy, or the car situation feels sketchy, Playa de Liencres and Somo are consistent beach breaks nearby with far friendlier access and better infrastructure. Both handle a wider swell and skill range and are worth knowing as a default when this spot isn't cooperating.
