A rivermouth sandbar sculpted by the collision of river and oceanic currents, Mundaka delivers one of the longest and most powerful left-hand barrels in Europe, located on the Basque Coast between Guernica and Bermeo in northeast Spain. It fires best on NW swell from 4-10ft, with a S wind keeping faces clean, and performs at low to mid tide when the sandbar is most exposed. This is strictly an advanced wave: the takeoff looks deceptively manageable until the water detonates onto a shallow bank and pitches top-to-bottom like a reef, despite the sand bottom. Wipeouts here are violent. The outer peak hosts a tight, competitive pack of up to 100 surfers on prime days, and localism is real and intimidating. Bottom: Sand over rivermouth bar. Season: September to February. Consistency: swell-dependent but highly consistent in autumn and winter. The cliff-side rip running back to the peak is your friend after a long barrel, use it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is crowded during the week and ultra-crowded on weekends from September through February. Up to 100 surfers can be in the water on a quality swell day. Localism is intimidating and competitive at the peak. Come in a small group, know your place in the hierarchy, and surf the sections further down the line if you haven't earned priority at the takeoff zone.

Access & Facilities

Park near the church in Mundaka's town centre, which overlooks the break directly. The paddle-out runs from the small harbour, using the cliff-side rip as a free escalator to the peak. Water quality is unreliable: rivermouth proximity means recent rain degrades conditions significantly, check before paddling out. Guernica is a short drive inland for food and accommodation.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mundaka is too big, too crowded, or the swell is out of window, the broader Basque Coast has several beach breaks around Sopelana and Zarautz that handle smaller, cleaner swell. Bakio, just north along the coast, offers a more accessible beach break option when Mundaka's sandbar is not cooperating.
