Raw Basque power delivered onto a shifting rock reef, Menakoz sits on the northeast Spanish coast and earns honest comparisons to heavy Hawaiian reef breaks. NW and N swells, ideally mid to high tide, funnel into the bay and rear up fast from deep water before detonating on the reef. SE winds are the clean offshore call. The wave works from slightly overhead to four times overhead, and bigger is genuinely better here, not just bolder. Advanced surfers only: the inside is studded with rocks, the peak shifts every set, and the local crew is a who's who of Basque surfing with hard-earned knowledge of every mood this wave pulls. Bottom: rock reef. Season: November through February. Consistency: moderate but specialist. Bring a gun and enough shoulder strength to chase a restless peak all session, and consider just surviving your first session a win.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowd of specialists, not beginners looking for a thrill. The local crew has spent years decoding this wave and their priority is not negotiable. If you're new, ask advice before paddling out. Their reported response captures the dynamic honestly: don't expect to go out and charge. Respect shown will be respect returned.

Access & Facilities

Access is rated difficult. The Basque coastline here is jagged and the approach demands care. Water quality runs clean outside of post-rain periods when runoff can briefly dirty the lineup. No facilities on site, come self-sufficient with water, snacks, and the right equipment. Wetsuits are mandatory throughout the season.

Nearby Alternatives

When Menakoz is too big or too stormy, the broader Basque coast offers options. Mundaka, the rivermouth left nearby, is one of Europe's most documented waves and fires on similar NW swells. Smaller beach breaks along the coast handle the same swell window at more forgiving sizes for intermediate days.
