Bakio is the Basque Country's most reliable beachbreak, sitting on an open west-facing bay roughly 30km northeast of Bilbao, and it's where the region's surfers head when Mundaka goes flat. NW and N swells in the 3-8ft range are the sweet spot, with S winds going offshore and the break running on all tides. The intermediate crowd here is real and established, a tight local crew that grows considerably in summer and swells further when Mundaka regulars migrate down the road. Bottom: sand. Season: September to November. Consistency: high year-round. A small stream bisects the beach, the western side scatters peaks across open sand while the eastern end has rocky outcrops that hold better banks and a quality right on bigger days. Come with a relaxed attitude because localism exists here, particularly on that east-end right when swell is pumping.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Bakio draws a large, established local crew and absorbs Mundaka overflow when that wave isn't firing, making the lineup consistently busy. Summers are crowded by beach resort traffic. The east-end right attracts the most competitive energy. Arrive at dawn, choose the western peaks on average days, and lead with respect.

Access & Facilities

Large car parks sit close to the beach, free or low-cost outside summer. Lifeguards operate in season. Food and accommodation available in the village. Water quality is generally fair but degrades after heavy rain due to the stream and nearby stormwater runoff. Bouncing off the sandy bottom is the main hazard in the shore dump.

Nearby Alternatives

Mundaka, 15 minutes south, is the obvious upgrade when swell is big and the sandbar is cooperating. On the other side of the Mundaka estuary, Laida offers a quieter alternative when Bakio is maxed out or too crowded.
