A punchy beachbreak a-frame sitting inside the Bilbao rivermouth near Algorta, Ereaga trades consistency for shelter, fading on the biggest swells when exposed breaks fire. It picks up W to N swell from 3ft and holds shape to around 8ft before the rivermouth geometry starts choking the energy. SE offshores clean it up nicely, and it works across all tides, though some submerged rocks demand awareness at low water. Intermediate surfers will find the most to work with here: the peaks are short, punchy, and occasionally hollow, but the lineup fills up fast on weekends and local respect is non-negotiable. Bottom: beach. Season: Sep-Mar. Consistency: medium. Pollution levels are serious, with a commercial bathing ban historically in force, so check current water-quality advisories before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ereaga draws a regular local crew and fills up hard on weekends. Bodyboarders are part of the lineup and tension around priority exists, particularly when swell is scarce. Sit wide, wait your turn, don't snake, and don't show up with a van full of mates expecting a warm welcome. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best shot at breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Urban beach with a car park, showers, and bars and shops within easy walking distance. Parking tightens considerably in summer. The affluent Algorta neighbourhood keeps the beach well maintained, but commercial pollution in the water is a genuine concern, not a minor footnote.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ereaga is too small or too busy, the Basque coast stretches out with options in both directions. Sopelana and Meñakoz are within striking distance for more exposed beachbreak and reef energy respectively. Mundaka sits further east for those prepared to wait on the right conditions.
