A two-kilometre stretch of shifting sandbar peaks on the Cantabrian coast near Santoña, Berria delivers punchy A-frame beachbreak across all tides when NW to N swell fills in. Optimal conditions land between 3-6ft with S or light SW winds offshore, though the beach can hold up to 8ft on a solid N groundswell at mid tide. Intermediate surfers will find the most here, and the lineup stays genuinely quiet outside summer weekends when beachgoers thin out the water. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring for best swell consistency. Consistency: moderate, needing at least 3ft to switch on. One honest warning: the beach reads smaller than it is from the carpark, so check the peak before committing to a board choice, and note that stormwater runoff can affect water quality after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Berria stays quiet most of the year. Winter sessions are practically deserted. Summer sees beachgoers arrive, but the water rarely gets competitive. Parking is free and rarely a problem except peak summer weekends. No notable localism.

Access & Facilities

The beach sits just past the Dueso penitentiary outside Santoña, straightforward to reach by road. Free parking directly at the beach. Good beach facilities on site with camping nearby. Avoid paddling out immediately after heavy rain due to stormwater runoff into the bay.

Nearby Alternatives

El Brusco, directly across the headland, offers a more refined beachbreak when Berria's sandbars aren't cooperating. Further along the Cantabrian coast, multiple consistent beachbreaks including options near Noja and Isla pick up similar NW swell and can provide better shape on certain tides.
