A mellow point break sitting on the KwaZulu-Natal coast north of Durban, Zinkwazi works on S to SE swells from 3ft and can produce surprisingly long rides on a good day. Offshore winds from the W to NW keep faces clean. Mid tide tends to be the sweet spot. The wave suits beginners and intermediates looking for uncrowded water, with only a handful of surfers showing up most weekends and near-empty lineups on weekdays. Bottom: sand over rock point. Season: autumn to winter (April to August). Consistency: low to moderate, with many flat spells reported between swells. Biggest honest warning: multiple locals report that the wave is fickle and rarely fires, so build in flexibility and treat any good day as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is genuinely quiet. Weekdays draw almost no one, and weekends see only a few surfers. No significant localism reports. That said, the surrounding residential area has documented petty crime, including vehicle and accommodation break-ins, so stay alert out of the water too.

Access & Facilities

Turn off the N2 toward Zinkwazi and follow the road toward the sea. The point is visible from the beachfront. Limited formal facilities in the immediate area. Lock your vehicle. If staying in rented accommodation, secure valuables and lock doors, as break-ins have been reported, including overnight incidents.

Nearby Alternatives

When Zinkwazi is flat, Ballito to the south offers more consistent beach and reef options across a range of swell sizes. Blythedale and Salt Rock are also within easy reach and worth checking on the same run.
