A consistent pier-assisted beach break on Durban's Golden Mile, North Beach fires hollow rights off the pier end and produces two distinct inside bowls at high tide that keep the lineup busy year-round. SSW, S, and E swells all work here, with NW or SW offshores grooming the faces. The wave is best from low to mid tide when the rights get fast and hollow, at high tide the North Bowl left and the Far Bowl right on the Bay Pier end come alive but draw serious crowds. Skill range runs beginner to advanced, though the sheer volume of surfers, longboarders, bodyboarders, and shortboarders sharing the break means priority is constantly contested. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round. Consistency: high, surfable roughly five days a week. Note that surfboards are banned from the patrolled swimming zones 9am to 5pm, so dawn patrol or evening sessions are essential for shortboarders wanting space.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

North Beach is one of Durban's most crowded surf zones. Longboarders dominate the small-day lineup at dawn, shortboarders flood in when size builds, bodyboarders are there all the time. Weekends are packed, weekdays more manageable. Localism is present but not aggressive. The locals know each other and their peaks, so respect priority, don't drop in, and acknowledge the regulars.

Access & Facilities

Direct beach access off the Golden Mile promenade. Paid carpark with car guards who work for tips, not salary. Lifeguards on duty 9am to 5pm. Water quality is fair to reasonable given the non-fishing pier keeps the immediate lineup cleaner than some Durban spots, though general urban runoff from the residential shoreline applies.

Nearby Alternatives

New Pier, one break south, is arguably the superior wave with a faster, more consistent right and less crowd pressure on weekdays. If E swell is running and you want a left, The Wedge can deliver a quality hollow left nearby. Dairy Beach is the designated all-day surfing area and worth checking when North Beach's swimming restrictions shut things down.
