Cave Rock delivers thick, heaving right-hand reef barrels on Durban's Bluff peninsula, a short drive from the city but a world away from its beachbreak scene. S to SW swell is the trigger, ideally 5-10ft, with a NW offshore wind and low-to-medium tide shaping up two distinct sections: The Pool, a wider, lofting barrel behind the tidal pool with a ledging takeoff, and The Rock, a rounder, shallower tube directly in front of the namesake cave formation. Light east wind also works, blowing into the face of the rights and keeping them clean. Both sections can run 50-100m on good days and hold swell well past double overhead. This is an expert-only lineup with moderate-to-busy weekend crowds of surfers who know exactly what they are doing. Bottom: shallow reef. Season: April to September. Consistency: high. Blow your wave and you will not get a second look from the locals.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw a capable local crew and the hustle is real. Locals here are not pointlessly aggressive, but they are competitive and they know their priority. Mid-week and early mornings thin the pack considerably. Do not paddle out if you cannot handle a fast, hollow reef takeoff and an assertive lineup. Respect the queue and watch how locals pick their entry windows.

Access & Facilities

From Durban, follow signs toward The Bluff and Brighton Beach. Cave Rock is just before the Brighton Beach tidal pool. A large rock on the left marks the spot and roadside parking puts you looking straight into the barrel. Lifeguards are present. Paddle out alongside the tidal pool and time the lulls carefully. The reef is unforgiving and the takeoff zones are not forgiving of hesitation. Sharks are present. Public toilets exist but are rough.

Nearby Alternatives

Anstey's, 800m north past Inbetweens, offers slightly mellower conditions for when Cave Rock is maxed or too crowded. Brighton Beach is an all-direction swell magnet with hollow options including a notable left. Further north in Durban, New Pier bends S swell into a fast right and is the city's most consistent and user-friendly option.
