Southbroom delivers reliable sand-bottomed rights on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, pulling in S to SE swells across a submerged reef that holds shape across all tides. Optimal conditions call for a solid S swell in the 3-10ft range with a light SW to NW offshore wind. Access is straightforward and that ease draws a crowd, so expect a packed lineup on good days, particularly on weekends. Bottom: submerged reef over sand. Season: year-round with peak S swell activity in winter months. Consistency: medium. Jump in from the rocks to bypass the shore break and position yourself early in a session before numbers build. Intermediate surfers will find the most value here, though advanced surfers pass through when bigger pulses fill in and the rights get more wall to work with.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Easy road access and a carpark make Southbroom one of the more accessible South Coast options, and the lineup reflects that. Weekend crowds are common. Localism is present but not reported as heavy. Getting in the water early and respecting priority will keep sessions more productive than trying to force your way into sets.

Access & Facilities

Drive in off the R61 South Coast road, park in the designated carpark, and enter from the rocks. Camping is available nearby. The broader South Coast strip has food, fuel, and supplies across multiple resort towns within a short drive.

Nearby Alternatives

When Southbroom is flat or maxed out, Trafalgar to the south offers beachbreaks and fast hollow rights in S swells. The Point at Scottburgh is one of the most consistent waves on the coast and worth checking if the swell direction suits. Umzumbe has potential for very long rides when the sandbanks align.
