A sandbank beachbreak on the Durban beachfront that occasionally detonates into hollow barrels when the swell carries east in it or arrives broken up from the south. Sitting south of New Pier, Wedge was shaped by the now-removed West Street Groin, which once kept sand off a horseshoe shark-exclusion reef built in the 1950s. SW, S, and E swells in the 3-6ft range are the sweet spot, with NW to W winds holding the face clean. Low tide is the call: the wave fattens and fades at high. All skill levels can enjoy the wave when it's small and running longboard-style lefts and rights, but when it stands up double-overhead and hollow, competent surfers only. Bottom: Sand. Season: April to September, plus E swells February to March. Consistency: average, closes out more often than not on standard swell. The pier is the main hazard after a wipeout on the south side.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is mellow most sessions and spreads the crowd away from the busier peaks to the north. There are no real locals staking territory. Those who surf here regularly are welcoming. Weekdays are quieter, weekend sessions can see a few more faces, but it rarely gets competitive.

Access & Facilities

Straight off the pier into the lineup, making the paddle-out one of the easiest on the Durban beachfront. The broader Durban beachfront has parking, restaurants, and board rental options nearby. Water quality is clean: longshore currents push New Pier runoff away from the break.

Nearby Alternatives

New Pier sits immediately to the north and handles similar conditions with more consistency. When Wedge is closing out on a standard SW swell, check the sandbanks further up the beachfront where the swell angle may produce a cleaner peak.
