A fast, punchy beachbreak a kilometre up the sand from Cave Rock, Ansteys sits on Durban's Bluff and punches above its weight for a city-accessible spot. South swells are the magic ingredient, wrapping into hollow right-handers that can barrel hard at low tide, while easterly or broken-up swell angles produce some quality lefts. NW offshores groom the faces cleanly. Works from 3ft up to a solid 10ft-plus, though the paddle gets serious when size builds. Intermediate surfers will feel most at home here, but the wave genuinely spans beginner to advanced depending on conditions and sandbank. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks. Season: March to October. Consistency: high. Avoid weekends unless you enjoy competing for set waves with half of Durban's surfing population. Weekday dawnie sessions in winter can deliver clean, hollow mornings with a fraction of the crowd.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw big crowds of surfers escaping Durban's town beaches, which means Ansteys can get ironically packed for a spot that promises a more relaxed vibe. Locals are welcoming but expect respect in the lineup. If you're from town, keep your head down and read the room. Weekdays and early mornings are the move.

Access & Facilities

From central Durban, take the M4 toward the airport and follow signs for the Bluff via Edwin Swales turnoff, then follow signs toward the beaches. Large car park makes access easy. Lifeguards on duty. Water quality is fair, typical of a residential coastal area. No significant hazards beyond crowds and the occasional closeout set on bigger days.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ansteys is maxed out or blown out, Cave Rock 800m south handles the size better and rewards the committed surfer with heavier, more critical walls. Heading north, New Pier and North Beach both bend S swells into fast rights and absorb crowds across multiple peaks.
