A point and beach break combo north of Durban, Westbrook delivers reeling rights along the sand and punchy beach peaks when conditions align. It needs a S or SW swell to fire, with NW offshore winds or glassy conditions keeping the face clean. Both the point and the beach blow out quickly, so dawn patrol is not optional here. The point holds swell up to 8ft, but size brings thick, heavy barrels and the occasional death closeout that will sort the fit from the underprepared. The paddle-out at size is a serious commitment. The local crew, the Chilli Crew, runs a tight etiquette framework and they will have eyes on you from the moment you park. Bottom: sand and reef/point mix. Season: April to October. Consistency: moderate, tide and wind sensitive. Bring a step-up for swell days and plan to arrive before anyone else does.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a handful of surfers, weekends draw a crowd. The Chilli Crew is a well-organised local contingent with firm ideas about wave priority. They are not hostile, but they are watching. Learn lineup etiquette before paddling out, sit wide until you read the pecking order, and do not snake. Respect goes a long way here.

Access & Facilities

Parking is right in front of the break. Access is straightforward from the coast road north of Durban. Water quality is generally clean. The main hazard is a sneaker set when you are caught inside, especially on the paddle-out at size. Keep your eyes on the horizon at all times.

Nearby Alternatives

If Westbrook is blown out or maxed, the broader KwaZulu-Natal North Coast has sheltered options depending on swell angle. Durban city breaks to the south can handle different wind directions and offer more consistent beginner to intermediate options when the open coast is messy.
