St Mikes, or Saints, is the focal point of South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal South Coast surf scene: a right-hand sand-bottom point that runs along rocks, producing long, workable walls with real power when SW groundswell pulls through. Autumn is prime time, when offshore land breezes clean up the face and SW swells deliver the most consistent goods. Works across all tides but low is generally best, and it can hold up to double overhead before things get genuinely consequential. The wave is forgiving enough for intermediate surfers to progress, but size and current will test anyone who underestimates it. Bottom: mixed sand and rock. Season: March through May. Consistency: moderate to high when the swell window aligns. One honest warning: a strong current runs with SW groundswell, so be prepared for serious shoulder burn and a longer-than-expected paddle back to the peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the South Coast's main event spot and it draws accordingly. When it's the only wave working, expect a heavy lineup. Weekends are noticeably more competitive than weekday dawns. Localism is generally manageable but respect the pecking order, know the rules, and don't drop in. Arriving early is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Good parking, a tidal pool, and beach amenities make logistics easy. The rock jump-off is the crux: time it carefully, watch the sets, and commit cleanly. Sharp rocks and big sets are real hazards. Sharks are present in these waters year-round, which is a fact of surfing the Wild Coast and KwaZulu-Natal, not a reason to stay home, but worth keeping in mind.

Nearby Alternatives

When Saints is maxed out or too crowded, the broader South Coast has several beach and point options that pick up similar SW swell with less traffic. Worth exploring the surrounding stretch of coastline when conditions warrant.
