Second Beach delivers mellow beachbreak peaks tucked between rocky outcrops just south of Port St Johns on the Wild Coast, making it a reasonable option for beginners hunting gentle sandbars in a region that mostly punishes inconsistency. It needs a small to moderate swell from anywhere in the NE-SW window, light NW offshore wind, and enough patience to wait out the frequent onshore spells that flatten shape. Works across all tides, though the window between clean and blown-out closes fast when the wind picks up. Crowds show up occasionally when conditions align, but the lineup rarely gets competitive. Bottom: sand. Season: variable, medium consistency year-round. Consistency: medium. Come on a small swell day after overnight land breeze and keep expectations honest, because most sessions here will be gutless or onshore.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Occasionally draws a crowd when conditions are decent, but Second Beach is not a heavily localised spot. The lineup is relaxed. Competition for waves is low most sessions, partly because clean conditions are infrequent enough to thin the crowd.

Access & Facilities

No formal parking or facilities on site. Port St Johns is the nearest town for food, water, and accommodation. The Wild Coast is remote, so arrive self-sufficient. Water quality is generally fine.

Nearby Alternatives

When Second Beach is blown out or flat, Mngazi to the south can hold rideable peaks on very small swells in light offshore conditions. Further afield, Coffee Bay's main beach fires up in summer with light winds, and Ntylonyane (Breezy Point) is the region's most consistent point option for surfers chasing longer walls.
