A reliable beach break on South Africa's Wild Coast/KwaZulu-Natal coastline, Palm Beach punches above its weight when banks align off two prominent black rocks toward the back of the beach. Optimal swell arrives from the SW to SE quadrant, with low to mid tide producing the best shape. Works from under 1m through to 3m-plus, shifting character as it builds: small days reward longboarders with mellow, workable walls, while anything over 3ft delivers hollow, punchy peaks with genuine grunt. Crowds are thin even on weekends, making extended solo or near-solo sessions common. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round with peak swell autumn through winter. Consistency: moderate to good. Arrive early and check the banks north and south of the rocks, as the best peak shifts with sand movement.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the quieter stretches of this coastline. Weekday sessions are often empty, weekends only marginally busier. No notable localism pressure reported, but standard respect applies: read the lineup, don't drop in, keep it civil on a quiet peak that regulars value precisely because it stays low-key.

Access & Facilities

Drive to the northern end of the car park past the surf club and follow the walkway south approximately 500m toward the headland. Basic ablutions at the adjacent park. Bring your own water and snacks. Check for rip currents running along the headland on larger swells, and be aware of the rocks that create the banks.

Nearby Alternatives

When Palm Beach is maxed out or the banks are off, the broader Wild Coast/KwaZulu-Natal region holds numerous point and beach options that handle larger, cleaner swell. Check neighbouring stretches north or south for sandbar variety on the same swell.
