A sandsbar break that punches well above its regional weight, Margate sits right in the South Coast town of the same name in KwaZulu-Natal. SW to SE swells from 3ft up to 8ft-plus activate the banks, with offshore winds from the NW being the move. Mid-tide tends to give the sandbar its shape, and the wave can run surprisingly long on a good day, 300m-plus of fast, hollow wall when conditions align. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle punchy, powerful sections, though the learning curve isn't brutal. Bottom: sand. Season: works year-round but best avoided during the December-January holiday rush. Consistency: reliable when swell is running. Dawn patrol is mandatory here, the window between 5am and 7am is when the crowd is light, the surface is glassy, and the banks show their real character before the onshore wind and the holiday crowd arrive together.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

November through January is a hard pass unless you enjoy fighting Joburg holidaymakers in a crowded lineup. Out of season the crowd drops to a manageable few surfers. Localism is not a significant issue but the usual respect protocols apply: read the pecking order, don't snake, don't over-paddle. Weekday mornings before 7am are your best bet for actual waves to yourself.

Access & Facilities

As central as a surf spot gets. Drive into Margate town and the beach is right there. Parking is straightforward, and the town has food, water, and accommodation in every direction. Water quality can be average after heavy rain given urban runoff. No unusual paddle-out hazards, but keep an eye on rips when the swell is pumping.

Nearby Alternatives

When Margate's banks are blown out or too crowded, check spots further down the South Coast toward Port Shepstone or north toward Scottburgh, both of which pick up similar SW swell with different bank configurations. The Wild Coast to the south offers more remote, less impacted setups if you have time and a vehicle.
