Fast-breaking right-handers over a shallow sandbank have made Ballito the standout beach break on KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast, about 40km north of Durban. The peak works best on a SE to S swell in the 3-6ft range, with light NW to W offshore winds cleaning up the face. Mid to low tide tends to push the sandbank into producing the most defined tubes, while high tide softens things considerably. Intermediates who can handle a quick drop and a hollow section will get the most out of it, though the lineup fills up fast on weekends given the wave's reputation and accessibility. Bottom: sand over a shallow bank. Season: April through September for the dominant winter swells. Consistency: moderate to good through the cooler months. The Ballito Pro, one of South Africa's longest-running competitive events, is held here annually, so expect heavy crowds around that window and plan your sessions for dawn patrol on weekdays.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ballito draws a competitive local crew, especially on weekends and during school holidays. The Dolphin Coast is densely populated relative to more remote KZN spots, so the lineup reflects that. Dawn patrol on a weekday cuts the crowd significantly. Respect the locals who built the wave's reputation.

Access & Facilities

The break is straightforward to reach from the Ballito town centre, with parking nearby. Shops, food, and board rentals are all within easy reach in town. Warm Indian Ocean water means boardies or a light 2mm are enough most of the year. Watch the shallow sandbank on the inside, especially at lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ballito is blown out or maxed, Salt Rock a few kilometres south offers a more sheltered reef option in bigger swells. Umhlanga Rocks further south toward Durban provides additional beach break alternatives when conditions don't align on the Dolphin Coast.
