A banana-shaped bombora reef off Terceira's northeast coast delivers some of the Azores' heaviest right-hand barrels, magnifying W-N swells into thick, wedging tubes that are always bigger than they look. Optimal conditions require medium to large W-NW swell, light S winds, and mid-to-high tide. Low tide turns this wave into a serious injury risk. This is an experts-only lineup, solo sessions are the norm, and that exclusivity is earned rather than accidental. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: October through March. Consistency: medium. Access is by boat from Vila Nova port or a short 10m paddle from Caldeira das Lajes, neither option casual for a wave this consequential.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Boat access and raw wave power keep crowds essentially nonexistent. Weekend sessions are typically solo. Talisca, 200m from the port, looks tempting but carries treacherous currents. Do not paddle there without local knowledge and a clear exit plan.

Access & Facilities

No parking, no facilities, no margin for error. Reach the break by boat from Vila Nova's small port or paddle from Caldeira das Lajes. Ask locals in Lajes village for current access conditions before committing. Bring everything you need including water, first aid, and a safety plan.

Nearby Alternatives

Praia da Vitória has accessible reef waves inside the harbour for when northwest swells are too big for Vila Nova. The north coast focal point near Lajes offers powerful, challenging setups across a range of swell sizes.
