Assorted reef waves break off a submerged reef inside the harbour at Praia da Vitoria on Terceira, Azores, making this the busiest surf spot on the island. The main draw is Vietnam, a fun left that walls up on mid-tide NW, N, and NE swells from 5-10ft with W winds offshore. Dereitas and Chinese's Left break off either side of an exposed rock closer in, with the left offering a particularly rippable hotdog wave on smaller N swells at high tide. The shifting take-off zone helps spread the crowd despite heavy weekend traffic. The reef is not excessively shallow or sharp, and currents are minimal, making it a viable learning ground for confident beginners and intermediates. Bottom: submerged reef. This is the most frequented break on Terceira, and it shows on good days. Weekend crowds can stack up. Located directly in Praia da Vitoria town with a car park and restrooms on site. Easy beach access into the harbour. Avoid surfing here after significant rainfall due to stormwater pollution from the harbour drainage.
On days when the harbour is too crowded or the swell is out of the window, Terceira has more powerful options to the north and south. The island's north coast offers challenging left setups on big NW swells, while the south coast comes alive on SW-W groundswells.
