A short, punchy left-hand reef peak on Terceira's northeast coast, Contendas delivers barreling sections when a solid E, SE, or SW swell refracts and reforms into the bay. It needs size to function: the wave halves as it bends into the bay, so paddle out expecting six feet on the face when the open ocean is reading double that. Low to mid tide is the move, shaping up the peak and triggering the best barrel sections before the wave closes out on the inside. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. The right goes dry quickly and the swell window is broad enough that the lineup sees periodic pressure, especially when SW winds push the best swells and keep the peak offshore simultaneously. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: October through March. Consistency: medium. Bring a step-up for anything over six feet, the wave can hold to ten-plus but gets heavy and unforgiving as it maxes out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup sees a few surfers on weekdays and can get busier on weekends, particularly because offshore SW winds arrive with the same swell that makes it cook. It rarely reaches heavy crowd levels by Azores standards, but the short wave length means the peak doesn't spread the field. Respect the rotation and read the sets before paddling into position.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available. No facilities on site, so bring water and food from Praia da Vitória or Angra do Heroísmo. No pollution or hazard concerns flagged, though reef entry and exit require attention at lower tides. The reef is shallow enough at low tide to demand careful foot placement.

Nearby Alternatives

When Contendas is too small or closing out, the reef setups inside Praia da Vitória harbour offer more forgiving walls on the same swell. For size and commitment, the Azores' heavier reef breaks around Ponta Negra deliver full barrels on similar E and SE swells but demand advanced ability and serious respect.
