A powerful left-hand point on Terceira's north coast, Quatro Ribeiras draws W-N swells off deepwater cliffs and flings them across the bay in long, fast walls before shutting down hard on a boulder beach. Offshore southerly winds hold the face clean. The wave needs to be overhead before it organises properly, and the sweet spot is 6-10ft, though it handles up to 15ft on the right swell. Low to mid tide gives the best shape, push past mid and the exit becomes seriously dangerous, with currents making it very difficult to get out of the water. A right-hander sits to the east of the main peak, slightly mellower but still carrying serious power. This is an expert-only wave. The combination of heavy currents, rocky shoreline, jellyfish, and a notoriously difficult exit keeps beginner and intermediate surfers away. Bottom: reef and boulders. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: medium.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded, which reflects the difficulty rather than obscurity. Experts only means the lineup stays thin, but when a proper swell hits you may share it with a handful of committed surfers from the island. No notable localism reports, but respect the place and the people who surf it regularly.

Access & Facilities

No facilities at the break. Free parking nearby. The rocky shoreline and boulder beach make entry and exit technical, especially as the tide rises. Currents can be strong. Plan your exit before you paddle out. Bring water and food, there is nothing on site.

Nearby Alternatives

When Quatro Ribeiras is too big or the tide is wrong, Terceira's north coast has other reef options. The harbour at Praia da Vitória offers easier, more sheltered reef waves accessible from the beach. Further along the coast, a small wave spot works best on N swells with protection from NW winds, offering manageable walls for lower commitment sessions.
