A south-facing pointbreak on Terceira's northeast coast, Salga needs a solid SW-W swell to line up and rarely delivers on its promising-looking setup. Optimal conditions call for SW to W swell in the 4-8ft range, offshore NW winds, and a low-to-mid tide to coax peeling walls out of what can otherwise be slopey, backing-off shoulders. The setup looks textbook from the cliff but badly placed rocks and inconsistent swell angles mean it underperforms more often than not. Intermediate surfers who arrive on the right day will find workable walls up to 100-200m, but expect company from the rock hazards more than from other surfers. Bottom: point over reef. Season: autumn and winter swells. Consistency: low. Approach with caution above 8ft as the spot turns genuinely dangerous, with swirling currents, shoredump, and a very difficult entry and exit at higher tides.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rarely an issue at Salga, mostly due to low consistency and a genuinely challenging paddle-out. Don't mistake the empty lineup for an invitation to go casual on your read of conditions. The difficulty here is the ocean, not the locals.

Access & Facilities

There is a car park on site, and camping facilities are available nearby, making it a reasonable base for waiting out a swell window. Entry and exit are the real challenge: swirling currents and shoredump around the pool at higher tides make getting in and out serious business. Pick your moment carefully and do not attempt the paddle-out alone in bigger surf.

Nearby Alternatives

If Salga is not delivering, Terceira's reef setups around Praia da Vitoria offer more accessible and consistent options, with assorted reef waves within reach of the harbour beach. The island also holds a Pipeline-style reef near the harbour to the south for experienced surfers on bigger swells.
