The Azores' answer to Pipeline fires on a shallow reef just south of the harbour at Ponta do Queimado, Terceira's northeast coast. It needs SW to N swell in the 4-10ft range, with SE offshore winds keeping the face clean. Mid-range tides all work, but the wave is unforgiving: fast, hollow rights pitch hard over submerged reef with short barrels that demand quick decision-making. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. Crowds are rarely an issue given the location's exposure and the specific conditions required to fire, but when it lines up it draws the island's better surfers. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: October through March, chasing North Atlantic groundswells. Consistency: medium. The wave is short on average but can link up to 150m on a good day, so bring a step-up and a backup board, the reef has no patience for the wrong equipment or hesitation.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded, partly because the break is exposed and rocky, partly because the conditions window is specific. When it fires in peak winter swell, expect the island's experienced locals in the water. Respect the lineup, know your ability level before paddling out, and let sets come to you until you read the peak.

Access & Facilities

A car park is nearby but no facilities on site. The cliffs and rocky shore mean entry and exit require care, particularly in bigger surf. Water quality is clean with no reported pollution. Bring your own water and food.

Nearby Alternatives

Praia da Vitória harbour has assorted accessible reef waves when this end of the coast isn't co-operating. The north coast of Terceira also offers powerful, more consistent set-ups across multiple breaks worth checking if the swell direction is marginal for Queimado.
