A steep glacial valley funnels into one of Norway's most photogenic surf bays, and Hoddevik has earned a genuine reputation among European cold-water travelers. W to NW swell is the ticket, ideally 3-6ft at mid to high tide, with SE winds keeping the face clean. Summer delivers waist-to-chest-high peaks that suit beginners and intermediates on foamies and longboards, while September through November sees the bay step up into punchy overhead conditions for experienced surfers. The lineup is welcoming and localism is essentially nonexistent, though summer weekends can fill with surf camp crowds. Bottom: sandy beach. Season: all year, June to August for learners, September to November for performance surf. Consistency: reliable when Atlantic swell is running. Pack a 5/4 wetsuit with hood and booties year-round, as water temps drop hard in winter and even summer stays cold.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Fewer than ten people live in the village, so the local crew is tiny and welcoming. Weekdays are quiet. Summer brings surf camp beginners and the lineup fills with foamies. Autumn and winter are the reward: fewer people, better waves. Standard lineup respect applies. No heavy local pressure to worry about.

Access & Facilities

Ask for Hoddevik in Leikanger in the Stad peninsula region. The switchback road into the valley is part of the experience. Parking sits at the northern point overlooking the bay. A large guesthouse rents rooms, boards, and wetsuits at budget rates, and there is a small food store in the village. Water is clean. Watch for submerged rocks at the edges of the bay and rips when swell is up.

Nearby Alternatives

The Stad peninsula has other exposed beach and point setups that pick up similar W to NW swell windows. If Hoddevik is blown out or maxed out, exploring the broader coastline north and south of the peninsula can turn up quieter options in the same swell. Check conditions at nearby sheltered bays when wind is onshore.
